Conference Highlights  Who Should Attend? 
  • Keynote speakers focused on themes related to both innovation and excellence that speak to our work and efforts in Summer, Winter, pre-college, special sessions and broader concerns in higher education and the profession.
  • New Administrators Workshop (pre-conference): what generations of summer administrators have called the best thing they ever did to build expertise, establish strong connections with colleagues and provide concrete tools & tips for their daily work.
  • Special "extended" sessions on topics relevant to the profession.
  • Concurrent sessions, panels and guided discussions focused on activities and research that support innovation and best practice in any type of summer, winter, or special session program.
  • Opportunities for both formal and informal networking, including a President's reception and our traditional awards banquet.
  • A local cultural excursion to a Portland museum followed by an evening reception sponsored by our co-hosts, the NAASS Western Region.

Anyone involved in the administration of summertime or winter educational programs interested sharing or learning more about activities and research that support innovation and best practices in their work.

We welcome senior administrators, staff, graduate students, companies and anyone else who works with or in support of:

  • Traditional summer or winter sessions

  • Summer- or wintertime education abroad experience
  • Other credit and non-credit special sessions/courses
  • Year-round enrollment, retention, and completion strategies

After the late registration deadline has passed, attendees may still register in person at the conference during any check in period. 

Member, Non-member, and Guest registration rates above are all-inclusive and cover the cost of all conference sessions, keynotes, breaks, meals, and other scheduled events, including the opening day President's Reception, the Monday Excursion/Western Regional Reception, and the final Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening.

Online registration closes on October 15, 2018.

If preferred, in lieu of  all-inclusive registration, guests are welcome to attend either or both the
Cultural Excursion/Reception and/or Awards Banquet only for the following costs:

The proposal site is open!  Click here to submit a session proposal for the 2018 conference.
Session Proposals will be accepted late May through July 16.

The committee invites proposals that highlight work done to support Innovation and Excellence for any type of summer, winter, or special session program (undergraduate, pre-college, summer start, education abroad, online only, etc.).

     Successful practices in marketing, financial/revenue models, student engagement, student success,       organizational changes, partnerships (internal/external), assessment, etc.

     New programs/populations

     New uses of technology

     Experimentation

✓     Research

     Or propose your own topic!

 

We are happy to consider any of the following formats for concurrent and other sessions:

      Round-table session (lunchtime conversations)

      Facilitated discussions (led by an individual or group)

      Presentations (single- or multi-speaker followed by Q&A)

      Panels (multi-speaker presentations followed by Q&A)

Venue & Travel Information

The 2018 Annual Conference will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland.

The newly renovated Doubletree is in the Lloyd District of Portland and is within walking distance of the Oregon Convention Center, the Moda Center, and the Portland Memorial Coliseum. The Portland MAX light rail has a stop directly outside the hotel.  Take MAX to City Center and locations around the city and region.

The conference rate of $169 - $199 is available for reservations Oct 28 (Sun) - Nov 2 (Fri). Only those attending the New Administrators Workshop may register for Oct 27* (Sat) using conference rates. These rates are available until Oct 9 or until the group block is sold-out, whichever comes first. 

Hotel space is limited so book now!

*Due to competing cultural events in Portland, we will not be able to offer conference rooms for the night of October 27 except for New Administrators Workshop (pre-conference) attendees.  However, there are many hotels in the Lloyd District just steps from the Hilton, should you wish to arrive early and explore the area.


Travel Options

Portland is easily reachable by plane, train, bus, or car.

  • Flights: Portland International Airport (PDX) is approx. a 20-min (9-mi.) drive from the hotel. A variety of (door-to-door) shuttle services to/from the hotel and airport are available here. [Seattle-Tacoma Airport (SEA) is a 3+ hour drive to the north.]
  • Rail: Amtrak stops in Portland's Union Station (see https://www.amtrak.com/)
  • Bus: Portland is served by both Greyhound and BoltBus
  • Car: Portland sits at the intersection of I-5 (N/S) and I-84 (E-W).  There are many beautiful routes into the Portland area!

Keynote Speakers

Sukhwant Jhaj

Dr. Jhaj is the Vice Provost for Academic Innovation and Student Success at Portland State University (PSU) in Portland, Oregon.  In this role, he provides vision and supports initiatives that directly advance undergraduate student success, innovation, and learning at PSU. A trained architect, Dr. Jhaj approaches higher education challenges from a design thinking perspective.  He oversees various university offices and program, including the Office of the Registrar, Advising and Career Services, the Office of Academic Innovation, and the reTHINK PSU Initiative.

Finley Cotrone

Dr. Cotrone is an Assistant Professor in Residence at the William Fr. Harrah College of Hospitality at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.  With a PhD in Organizational Psychology, Dr. Cotrone’s research interests include emotional intelligence and regulation and her professional and teaching expertise is in areas of training & development, leadership & management, and service culture & delivery in the hospitality industry.  She has industry experience in all aspects of training and leadership development including diversity leadership.

Pre-Conference Workshop for New Administrators

The New Administrator's Workshop, which runs 1 1/2 days before the start of the conference proper, remains one of the most popular parts of the NAASS Annual Conference tradition.  Are you a new (or newish?) administrator responsible for any aspect of running a summer/winter/special session program, including overall administration, marketing, curriculum, hiring, communication, and reporting?

This is the place for you!

Come join our experienced and dynamic Pre-Conference leader as he takes you on a tour of the summer world and sends you off with real-world tools and (bonus) the chance to establish some meaningful connections to peers that will last for years (previous participants speak of their "year" attending the New Administrators Pre-Con!)

Cultural Excursion & Networking Reception

We are very excited to be visiting the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) for our networking/cultural excursion.

Conference attendees will all have full admission to the museum, which can be used during the excursion or on your own at a different time.  Come spend several leisurely hours exploring this museum that shows how Oregon has been embracing innovation in science and industry across its past and into the present.  Bonus: we will all have access to the touring King Tut Exhibit they will be hosting in October!

Following our hours in the museum, join us in the beautiful Theory restaurant, right inside of OMSI, where we will enjoy locally-themed and sourced flavors from the Northwest. This reception is sponsored by the Western Region.
